Happy almost Friday!
This past weekend I attended the wedding of one of my oldest & dearest friends. It was so refreshing to celebrate, drink, dance and spend a week prepping my skin for wearing a full face of makeup (that had to stay on during aforementioned dancing). According to Instagram, everyone is attending weddings right now, so I thought I’d share some tips & tricks for makeup prep, skincare recommendations and a breakdown of all the makeup I used. Reminder: you can guarantee that I’m always going to do the most and you absolutely do not have to do all of these things.
General Tips
The key to good makeup is good skincare. Ask any makeup artist. When prepping to wear makeup, your goal is always texture over clarity. Makeup can cover any discoloration/redness, so you want to focus on making sure your skin is as smooth and hydrated as possible so that makeup blends and stays. (By the way, texture over clarity is the number one tip for anyone planning their own wedding: a good makeup artist can do anything with a smooth, bouncy canvas.)
Practice makes perfect. We know this, but it’s worth the reminder. Practicing your looks before the day of will ensure you know the products are compatible with each other, how much to use and give you the opportunity to try things out, make mistakes and start over.
Less is more. Another thing we know, but don’t always apply to makeup/skincare. The more skincare that is underneath your makeup, the more potential for pilling and caking. Same goes for layering makeup – start with a little product and build as you go if needed.
Double cleansing is essential. I almost always advocate for a double cleanse, but when wearing makeup it is non-negotiable. An oil or balm cleanser will effectively break everything down before going in with a water-based cleanser to rinse it all off. If you don’t double cleanse and go straight in with the rest of your products, you will trap everything left on your skin, driving it in deeper and risk breakouts and irritation. Micellar water is okay to use on your eyes or as an additional step to remove any residue, but does not count as a cleanse.
