Hello hello,
Congratulations to Kara for winning the Experiment PR Box Giveaway! Check your email! Look in spam if you can’t find it!
On the topic of giveaways, thank you SO much to everyone who has taken the time to fill out the survey I sent out last week. You’ve given me tons of incredible feedback and ideas, and also made me realize that I need to do a much better job advertising the benefits of being a paid subscriber! So few of you knew that every month I do a giveaway for a box of skincare products. Products plural! To fix this, I am going to start announcing the winner every month, starting today! Congrats Sally! You should also check your email and look in spam if you can’t find it!
Oh, did you think that was the end of the giveaway talk? Remember, there’s a product box giveaway happening if you fill out the survey! You have until next Monday, 3/31 at 5pm EST. I will announce the winner in the newsletter.
After I sent out last week’s email, there was more participation during Office Hours than ever. It was great! But wanted to clear up some confusion that has come up in your survey responses.
“Office Hours” is a bit of a misnomer––you have ~24 hours to participate and you don’t have to be there live to get an answer. This is a perk for paying subscribers, though occasionally I open it up to all. Here’s how it works:
SUNDAY NIGHT: The weekly chat link is sent out. As soon as the chat is open, any paid subscriber can start submitting questions.
MONDAY NIGHT: I hold “Office Hours” for an hour. This means I’m live and active on chat, answering all of the questions that have been submitted and any that come in during that hour.
If you’re around to join on Monday, great! If not, I’ll still reply to you and you can read my response at a different time.
Sometimes I have follow-up questions, so joining live means we can have a back and forth. You’re also welcome to participate by replying to others. Basically, it’s a casual, conversational opportunity to chat with me and other skincare-minded folks if you’re around, but you can still participate from the sidelines.
For today, I want to show you guys what Office Hours is all about. Here’s a look at what was asked and answered this week.
The most common question I get during any sort of Q&A, not just Office Hours
Hi! Not all are created equal, but a high-quality red light mask is absolutely worth it and one of the best investments you can make in your skin. It’s a really precise science that was developed by NASA, but there are specific parameters that need to be met in order for the effects (firming, smoothing, wrinkle/fine line reduction, reducing redness and inflammation) to occur. The CurrentBody Series 2 is hands down the best one available now and it’s my #1 at-home device rec, followed by ZIIP. I’ve actually written a ton about both, explaining how they work and what they’re best for. Linked here, here and here.
We tackle a lot of routine-related questions and troubleshoot problem areas
Hi! Good on you for being religious about sunscreen––that’s steps 1-5! I would try incorporating a retinoid. The skin on the neck is thinner & more prone to irritation, so just go slowly, a couple times a week to start. I really like this one from Murad for the neck because they have specifically tested it on both face and neck and it’s creamy like a moisturizer. [Ed. Note: if it doesn’t irritate your neck, you can also use the same retinoid that you use on your face. Other options I like for the neck are Medik8 and Sachi.]
I may ask clarifying questions and make a plan to follow-up if we can’t solve it right there and then
It’s a good place to talk through things you’ve seen on Reddit and share any images that have been burned into your mind
Hi! My understanding is that it is *extraordinarily* painful, even with the nerve blocks (I remember reading someone on reddit say it felt like someone was hot ironing their bones lol that image will never leave my mind!) and that the risks outweigh the benefits. There’s concern about melting fat as well as fusing tissue, which can cause complications & deformities down the line. I’d advise her to look into microneedling (possibly with RF if done by a very trusted provider), co2 laser or a lower face/neck lift, which I know sounds really intense but is actually a lot more common than may be believed and I’ve seen often recommended as an alternative to Ultherapy in terms of cost + efficacy.
I will humbly admit when I am slacking, I’m so sorry. I will also always try to find an alternative rec. If anyone sees the Soleil Toujours Eye Illuminator in stock, don’t keep it to yourself!
Hi! Great question lol…so yes, links in the bio (my ShopMy specifically) is the best place to look for my recs generally, BUT I need to do a better job keeping them updated, which is a project I’ve been working on very slowly and am going to right here, right now publicly hold myself accountable to get on it!!! So with that said, I don’t know if the product you’re thinking of will be easy to find. Are you talking about the Soleil Toujours with SPF? It has been out of stock for ages and I’m worried it’s discontinued. Or the Ole Henricksen? Which is here! The Naturium Vitamin Bright Illuminating Eye Cream has a similar looking finish to the Soleil Toujors, so could be worth a shot.
More LED questions. Good thing it’s my favorite thing to talk about.
Finally, who knows what routine-altering knowledge you’ll come away with!
Three Other Things
TIL how Fuji Film stayed afloat during the rise of digital cameras by pivoting to skin care using the same chemicals they use to prevent film oxidizing. Cool!!!
Thank you to Gloss Angeles Podcast for blessing us with the intel we’ve all wanted for years: how the Olsen twins get their waves. I’m obsessed with this clip where their hairstylist reveals that Jesus was their reference image for the Met Gala. Also, shoutout to my fellow air dry queens!!!!!!
Continuing with her groundbreaking reporting, Kirbie Johnson (one of the co-hosts of Gloss Angeles) published a breakdown of the Thirteen Lune drama.
