Bakuchiol is a plant-derived ingredient, extracted from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia (also known as the “babchi” plant), which has long been used in traditional Eastern and Ayurvedic medicine. Most people are familiar with bakuchiol due to its extensive marketing as a “natural retinol alternative” or “plant-based retinol.” It’s a real ingredient with promising data behind it, but I push back on its common framing for 2 main reasons:
